The Wells Golf Club Seniors’ Championship was played over 36 holes, spanning two days.
At the end of the first day, Martin Barnes, on 78, was chasing Mark Western and Glen Crocker, who both shot 76.
On the second day, Western held an overall one shot lead at the end of nine holes, with Barnes and Glen Crocker just one and two shots away respectively.
On the eighteenth hole, Barnes found tree trouble twice and recorded a six. Western had a five and Crocker made an exquisite chip from the front of the green and left himself a two foot putt for a four, which he duly converted.
The final gross scores were: Mark Western, 161 (76+85), Martin Barnes, 159 (78+81) and the winner of the Cole Cup for 2016 was Glen Crocker, with 157 (76+81). Brian Cowley brightened up his day with a hole in one.
Malcolm Terry put together two excellent and consistent nett scores (71+72) 143, to take third prize. Jon Mackness had a magnificent second day to record 140 (73+67) and take second prize.
This left Day One leader, Colin Webber, requiring a decent second day performance, which he duly delivered to be the 2016 winner of the Dalby nett cup with his score of 139 (67+72).
The Stragglers played Dawlish Warren and were narrowly defeated 3–2. The winning pairs were Terry Searle and Colin Wilde, 2&1 and John Baker and Richard Mansfield, 7&5.
Nearest the pin in two on the fifteenth was won by Wilde.
The Men’s Avalon team have played two matches: Stockwood Vale and Cricket St Thomas. In the Stockwood match, the pairings of Jason Huck and Bob Lench and Mark Western and Ian Burr both dovetailed well and came in with 5&4 and 5&3 wins. Phil Spring and Mike Magrath were two down at the seventeenth, but won the last two holes to halve their game and halve the match. Baden Wilkinson recorded five birdies during his game!
The Cricket St Thomas match finished with a 3–2 win.
