A rather wet start didn’t dampen the spirits of 152 competitors who took part in this year’s Club Captain’s Day at Wells Golf Club. As the day progressed, the showers stopped and the sun came out, making ideal golfing conditions for most of the day.

This year’s competition was a 4BBB, with a number of Nearest the Pin competitions. Competitors were welcomed for a drink and nibbles at the ‘halfway house’ by Club Captain, Stuart Mann. After a couple of whiskies, some competitors improved their scoring over the remaining holes, whilst for some others it seemed to have an adverse effect!

The overall winners (on countback) with 45 points, were William McKay and Dietrich Martini. The Best Men’s team were father and son pairing, Trev and Sam Jones, also with 45 points. With 41 points, Cath Levell and Kathy Lane won the prize for the Best Ladies team. Also on 41 points, were Bob and Tina Davies, who won the best Mixed Team prize. The golf was followed by a barbecue and prizegiving.

Other results – Second: Mike Magrath and David Gibbon (45 points on countback); Third: Mike Cundill and Nigel Goodwin (44 points); Fourth: David Sheppard and Roger Burns (43 points).

Nearest the Pin winners were Kathy Lane, William McKay, Pete Walker and Sue Slade. Nearest the Pin in Two were Mike Gee and Glynis Slater.

Wells Seniors entertained a strong Taunton and Pickeridge side and did well to share the spoils in a hard fought drawn match – three and a half games each.

There were wins for Club President, John Chillington, with an in-form Bill Carruthers, Seniors’ champion, Jack Baillie, with Chris Strickland and six-handicapper, Dave Hayward, with the evergreen Piers Dalby. The half was gained by Graham Bingham and Richard Sheard, who achieved a stirring come-back by winning the last two holes.
