Mendip Golf Club saw another very busy week with several competitions and matches played in glorious weather. With the greens quickening considerably, scoring was not always that easy. 94 entrants competed for the RAFA Trophy.
Division Three went to Steve Turner with a fine 67. New member, Alexander Edwards, was second with 68, and Alan O’Leary was third, with seventy, after countback from very much a veteran, Roger Wickett. Division Two was won by Gary Pepler with 69, Nigel Brokenshire was second, with seventy and Terry Carter third, with 71, after a three-way-countback.
Division One went to Nick Cox with the best of the 69s, with Richard Jeffrey second and Henry Treasure, third. However, the best score of the day came from ten-handicapper Stephen Antell, who carded an excellent 66 and wins the Trophy this year.
The Men’s Avalon B Team won their latest match against Wheathill 3½–1½, with wins for team-debutante and new member, Stuart McKee, playing with Duncan Offer, Richard Salter/Andy Wells, Paul Smith/Simon Wynn, with Shaun and Liam Robertson this time contributing a half.
The Ladies’ Medal saw a good entry and a win in Division One for Jinhee Page, the only Lady to better her handicap, with a fine net-73. Second was Edwina Willis with 75 and third was Marian Speed with 79, after countback. Division Two saw a welcome return to form for Andrea Williams, who won with 78. Nichola Croft was second, with 81, and Chris Williams was third, with 83.
Division Three went to Ann Padley with eighty, Sue Needham was second with 82, and Carol Mosley, third, with 83. The Reid Trophy, played at the weekend, was won by Marian Speed with 36 points, Liz Rose was second with 32, beating Chris Olds on countback, with Kay O’Connor and Mary Ware also carding 32 points.
The Ladies’ Inter-Club Team visited Taunton and Pickeridge, and gained a very good halved result. Winners for Mendip were Lulu Carolan, Libby Bellew and Chris Williams, with Anne Hopkins picking up a valuable half.
The annual running of the Ollie Parfitt Cup took place, the only Medal event in the Seniors’ calendar, where seventy entrants took part. Martin Myers also presented a new Trophy for the Best Gross Score, and Martin wished for this Trophy to be called the Stanley Frewin Trophy. It will be remembered that Stan recently passed away, having been a generous supporter of the Club’s events over many years. A very nice gesture by Martin.
This year saw some excellent scoring in ideal conditions, with the Cup being won by Andy Griffiths with net 65; a very overdue handicap reduction will follow! In second place was Nigel Cheshire with 67, third with 68 was Seniors’ Vice-Captain, Bryan Lewis, and Stephen Lake was fourth, with 69, beating Adrian Brooking-Clark on countback. Winner of the gross went to three-handicapper, Ian Perkins, with 73, with Bryan Lewis second, on 77, and Martin Myers, third, with 78.
The Seniors’ Avalon Team registered a 4–1 home win against Long Sutton. Wins here for Martin Wilkins/Philip Moores, Bryan Lewis/David Collins, Terry Carter/Jim Scott and Martin Myers/Peter Rumming.
Against Worlebury, the Seniors’ Friendly Team went down 2½–3½. Mendip’s points came from John Brooksbank/Kevin Carmody and Dick Ransley/John Whyman, with Seniors’ Captain, Andy Frampton, playing with Nick Inskip, gaining a half.
Captains’ Day, played earlier this year, attracted 112 entrants playing in teams of four. The winning team were early starters, Stephen Cox/Selwyn Rees/Ken Langridge/Clive Down with 99 points. Stephen Creese/Matt Bendall/Roger Wickett and returning ex-member, James Baughan, were second, with 96, and Kevin Mattock/Peter French/Paul Apfelstedt/David Kent were third, with 95. The evening entertainment, organised by the social committee, were The Village Folk, and the evening raised £257 towards the Captain’s Charity appeal.
And finally, the Pro Shop Nearest the Pin winners were Connie Cox, Wayne Black and M. Evans.
