WELLS Golf Club staged the Queen Elizabeth II Memorial Open 4BBB on a fine autumnal day, providing a welcome change in conditions.

With recent rainfall, the course is recovering well, and this was reflected in the remarkable number of two’s recorded - 22 in all.

The winners were Paul Lewer (10) and Jackie Lewer (19), of Wells Golf Club, who returned an excellent score of 47 points. It was a steady and consistent round, with Paul and Jackie complementing each other perfectly throughout.

John Harvey (12) and Joseph Harvey (22) finished runners-up with 44 points, despite recording a blob during their round. Their score was boosted by four four-point holes, including three birdies from Joseph on par 3s and a birdie from John on the 18th.

Third place went to the home pairing of Mark Neighbour (7) and Richard Ashby (9) with 43 points, taking the place on countback from Reuben Ashton (8) and Richard Rowntree (10). The latter also secured their position on countback, with three other Wells pairs finishing on the same score.

Local knowledge clearly proved valuable, with Wells pairings occupying 15 of the top 16 places.

The leading visiting pair were Andrew Clueit (8) and Luke Silver (9) from Minehead, who scored 43 points. Their solid round included three birdies.

Second among the visiting teams were Phillip Piercy (0) and Richard Rodgers (19) of Orchardleigh Golf Club, who recorded 39 points on countback. Their round included two birdies and an eagle — a superb 2 on the par-4 11th.

Third place among the visitors went to Paul Taylor (11) and Ian Rogers (26) of Lansdown Golf Club, also with 39 points, again decided on countback.
