Wells Seniors played Chipping Sodbury at home on Monday, 24th September, in very poor weather with constant light rain.
However, the Wells team soon mastered the conditions and took the first four matches with wins for Dave Hayward and Stuart Mann, 6&5, Lawrence Sokol and Mike Shave, 4&3, Peter Leverick and Ken Ford, one up, and Nick Wilson and Richard Sheard, two up. Ken Stokes with Colin Sellar and Gary Middleton and David Flinders lost hard-fought games before the final Wells team of Bill Carruthers and George White won 3&2. The match result was a win for Wells, 5–2. Later in the week, Wells Seniors played away in the local derby at Mendip Golf Club. There was no stopping the Wells team as they stormed to perhaps their finest win of the season, by 6½–½. There were excellent wins for Glyn Hallett and Ron Hancock, 2&1, Dave Hayward and George White, one up, Peter Leverick and Stuart Mann, 2&1, Nick Wilson and Allan Bancroft, 2&1, George Davis and Mike Stringer, 2&1, Adrian Lawrence and John Moxon, 3&2. Gary Middleton and Peter Bartholomew secured a good half.
This year’s Tucknott Trophy was played on Saturday, 29th September and was won by Richard Birch and Nigel Pring, with a very creditable 47 points. Second were Rod Patch and Mike Metcalfe, with 43 points, followed by third place Alan Todd and Sam Todd, with 41. The overall field produced twelve two spots on the day, with the first and second pairings
accounting for three each.
