In the Men’s Bristol and District match against Bristol and Clifton, Alan Todd and Tim Harris had a comfortable 5&4 victory, followed by Dave Hayward and Steve Barrow with a 2&1 win.
Jack Baillie and Bill McCollum won two-up, as did Nick Wilson and Pascal Norman. The day was complete when Glen Crocker and Mike Metcalfe secured a 7&6 win. A 5-0 start to the season.
The next match was against Thornbury. Unusually, Alan Todd and Will Thompson succumbed in the first match, as did Steve Barrow and Dave Hayward. Pascal Norman and Nick Wilson continued their winning ways with a 5&4 victory, as did Mike Metcalfe and Glen Crocker, who won 6&4.
First out in the Avalon League game were Simon Jackson and Malcolm Terry, winning 3&2. Jason Huck and Ian Burr played out a great game, sharing seven birdies between the two pairs. The game was halved, as was George Davis and Glen Crocker’s. Pascal Norman and Bob Lench found the going difficult, but Danny Wyrwoll and Jamie Marklew won 7&6.
First out in the next match Simon Jackson and Andy Williams cruised ahead, winning 3&1. Glen Crocker and Brian Mitchard managed a half. Pascal Norman and Adam Payne dovetailed well, winning 4&2. Last out were Jamie Marklew and Danny Wyrwoll, who won 3&2.
Wells Seniors played Saltford in the first round of the Seniors’ Somerset Bowl. Glyn Hallett and Alan Elkins did well to lose only one-down. Chris Betenson and Malcolm Terry had a tight match but came through to win one-up. Mike Magrath and Bill McCollum halved their match. Veteran George Davis, paired with Steve Clark, won 4&2. Steve Rowse and Grant Rogers won 4&3, and Wells won 3.5-1.5.
In the Men’s Somerset Bowl, Jason Huck and Simon Jackson had a fine 7&5 win. Will Thompson and Pascal Norman fought hard and won one-up. Steve Clark and Gary Nutt won their match 5&4. Alan Todd and son Sam triumphed 3&2 and Mike Metcalfe and Nick Wilson managed a half. Wells won the match 4.5-0.5.
In the Stragglers’ match, John Baker and Richard Mansfield had a creditable half, as did Mark Edgell and Gary Leigh, as well as Bill Levell and Stuart Gowen.
The Ladies competed in the Karen Nicholls Foursomes competition. The strong pairing of Sue Wells, who first had her name on the trophy in 1986, partnered by Tina Davies, won the gross competition. Gill Magrath and Janice White claimed the nett trophy just ahead of Erica Klim and Cath Levell.
The Ladies Interleague team played a home game against Orchardleigh. The team Captain, Jill Bocquet, halved her game. Kathy Lane, Janice White and Erica Klim won their games and the match was halved.
The first nine-hole roll up golf on a Thursday evening proved a great success, as did the Open Mic night afterwards. Club members and visitors showed their talents to the full, with a range of music from country and western to pop being enjoyed. Everyone is looking forward to the next one on Thursday, 14th June.
