Wells Juniors won this year’s Somerset League and were congratulated by Liza Lovell, junior co-ordinator. The first match in April was a settling-in period after which they steadily improved their score, gaining 100 points at the penultimate match at Oake Manor.
In the final day’s golf at Mendip Spring, they showed true grit and came in with an excellent 115 points. This clinched the trophy eight points ahead of Worlebury.
John Moxon was delighted to have fine weather and an excellent turn-out for his Seniors’ Captain’s Day. There were prizes both for individuals and teams (drawn to include a high, medium and low handicapper, with two out of three scores to count).
The winner of the Captain’s Salver, Peter Bartholomew, achieved an amazing 47 stableford points! The second individual prize went to Pete Boehm with an excellent 44 points, and third was Paul Hole with 43. An encouraging number of players had over forty points, and the good run of the ball clearly suits many senior golfers, even if it does mean a detour down the hill on the 3rd!
There were some impressive team scores too, with winners John Coughlan, Pete Boehm and Paul Hole coming in with a stunning 95 points. The next three teams all had ninety points (an average of five-per-hole), with the second prize going to Colin Webber, Mike Hiles and Ron Coles on countback (with 43 on the back-nine), narrowly beating Mike Metcalfe, Terry Pearce and Tony Harrison (42 on the back-nine) and Andy Williams, Tony Blunden and Pete Bartholomew (41 on the back-nine).
Nearest the pin on the fifth went to Terry Pearce, nearest the pin in two on the 12th was won by Mike Metcalfe and on the 15th by Roger Webber. There were nine two-spots from Alan Elkins, Mike Hiles, Glyn Hallett, John Slater, Ian Gleave, Pete Boehm, Colin Webber, Steve Payne and Martin Barnes, and a good day was had by all!
