Captain’s Day dawned bright and clear and a full field of 140 entries joined in to celebrate Andrew Boatswain’s year. Presents for everyone included a ball and pitch-mark repair tool.

The 4bbb format with two scores counting on each par-three brought in high scores. The first-place Men’s pair were John Baker and Roy Elliott; first Ladies’ pair were Tina Davies and Cath Levell; first mixed pair were Mike and Gill Magrath and the runners-up (on countback) were David Young and Tin Lunnon.

There were 22 winners of the twos competition, showing the high standards achieved. A most enjoyable day was rounded off with a lovely meal from Alan and his staff. We managed to raise just over £1,100 for the Alzheimer’s Society.

Ladies’ Captain’s Day dawned bright and clear, but the weather had other ideas, and after some heavy showers the thunder and lightning decided to shorten the game! Ladies’ Captain, Kathy Lane, called all the teams in to enjoy a delicious cold buffet, and to award first place prizes to Polly Williams, Rose Hallett and Chris Gee with a magnificent 54 points. In second place were Janice White, Jann Ambrosini and Jan Hayward.

The Ladies’ Captain was thanked for her hospitality and excellent organisation, and was given a small gift in appreciation of her work over the year.

Tall Pines are one of the fixtures that the Stragglers really look forward to, as they are a great bunch of blokes! We had a few quite heavy showers, and with the course set up for Captain’s Day, they had a great match, winning by four games to one.

The Avalon League team have played two matches in quick succession. Against Stockwood, Simon Jackson and Mike Vincent manged a half; Malcolm Terry and Club Champion Mike Metcalfe lost 2&1.

Nick Carter and Ian Nicol halved their match. Nick Wilson and Pascal Norman won 6&4 and Glen Crocker and Ian Burr had a good win with 4&3. Their next match versus Long Sutton resulted in a 4-1 loss.
