Sandy Heath did Wells and the South West proud recently at the National Finals of the England Golf medal held at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire.

It poured down for the practice round, but the competition day was sunny with a strong wind. The course was in lovely condition; flat parkland with the usual bunkers and water, which she managed to avoid. The greens were the most undulating she’s played on!

Sandy’s husband, Steve, was a great caddy and knew when to advise and when to stay quiet! She came a very creditable 16th out of 59 with nett-79, which was only seven shots off the lead. Sandy said: “It was a brilliant experience and I was very pleased with the way I played.”

Wells’ Past Captains played their annual match against Somerset Golf Captains on a fine, warm day, with the course in pristine condition after a lot of recent rain. This was the nineteenth such match and Wells Golf Club is now the only club team Somerset Captains play.

There were wins for Andy Williams and George Davis, Clive Keen and Derek Biggs, Colin Mantle and Stuart Mann, Malcolm Terry and Eric Loxton, Steve Rowse and Adrian Lawrence. Wells thus ran out the winners 5-3, with the overall score now being Somerset four wins, two draws and Wells thirteen wins.

The Ladies’ Inter-League team played well against visiting team Orchardleigh with wins recorded by Glynis Slater, Jill Bocquet, Janice White, Rose Hallett and Gill Magrath.

The Seniors’ team were away to Kingsdown, which is a great golf course with some interesting holes. Had we been in a show-jumping competition, we would have scored no penalty points but alas, this was a golf match and we lost 7-0 to the better side on the day.

After 25 matches, some would say we finally succumbed to a white-wash. Not at all, these were close matches and had a few holes gone Wells’ way, the score would have been a little different. The team played well and local knowledge certainly helped the Kingsdown team. It was, however, a good day with some enjoyable golf and good hosts.

First out for the Stragglers, playing at Dawlish Warren, were Steve and George Barrow, who played against the B Team Captain, who now plays to a 5 but was once +2; we lost 3/2. Second were Guy Timson and Bill Levell, who also lost 3/2. Third was George Davis, partnered by Terry Pearce, who lost two-down.

The next three matches were all wins for Wells, with Richard Williams and Simon Harris winning 2/1, John Baker and Stuart Gowen winning 4/3 and finally Steve Heath and Adam Holiday also winning 4/3. Overall result was a draw of 3-3, which is a very creditable result. So, The Warren won overall, 7/6.

Home team winners of the Texas Scramble Open held recently were the mighty team of Ben Jones, Mark Edgell, Ian Macdonald and Simon Elliott with a score of 56.9. Nearest the pin in two winners were Peter Bartholomew, Daryl Bartholomew, Lenny Brooker and Lee Smith.

The winning visitors’ team came from Rushmore and everyone was congratulated on turning out in appalling conditions, with rain the whole day through. Special thanks must go to our catering team, who worked tirelessly from 7.30 a.m. to 7.30 p.m. providing bacon baps, meals and drinks: Alan, Paige, Lauren, Paul and Daniel.
