The rain’s persistence has been remarkably unkind in recent weeks, with the Ladies March Madness competition being made a casualty.
The first Senior’s Stableford competition of the year found a better day and a good field found the course held up well, despite the regular deluge of rainwater dropping onto it over the past few weeks.
It was quite fitting that the Senior’s Captain, Mike Gee, came home first in Division One with 39 points – well done Mike.
The Division Two winner was Richard Sheard, with 34 points. Scoring was tough, the course was still a bit sticky in places, but the overall result was golf course five, weather nil.
The Wells Golf Club outing to Morgado Golf Resort in Portugal during the same week has been thoroughly enjoyed by all there, especially as the weather was in sharp contrast to that left behind.
Sixteen relaxed and happy golfers played three different courses over the week: Morgado, Alamos and Salgados.
Each course has its own characteristics, with carob and olive trees in abundance and very interesting greens to test even the most experienced players. A variety of formats and playing partners provided the group with plenty of opportunities for friendly banter.
There were many outstanding moments, including four birdies in a row, a birdie which began with a topped shot off the tee, landing just short of the ladies tee, followed by a shot into the bunker, followed by a golden ferret!
There were plenty of opportunities for long hitters to let rip and for the more mod- est to hit straight down the inviting fairways.
Jill Bocquet was congratulated on organising flights, accommodation and day trips superbly and Mike Metcalfe was thanked for organising the golf.
As the scent from the orange groves wafted across the countryside each evening, results of the days competitions brought cheers and surprises.
Overall, Mike Metcalfe played best with David Syzmanski a close second. Ladies took the next four places on the leaderboard.
