A group of the Ladies’ Past Captains had a very successful two days at the Somerset Ladies’ Past Captains’ Team Event at Meon Valley.

Jenny Davis, Sue Wells, Glynis Slater and Hazel Carmichael were lying third overall at the end of the first day, out of 21 teams, with 98 points. They came in with 108 on the second day, and were highly delighted to receive the trophy. Sue Wells also succeeded in getting the Silver Division ‘nearest the pin’ prize.

A large group entered the Texas Scramble with Pascal Norman, Mike Metcalfe, Grant Rogers and Simon Elliott coming in first, with 55.3 points, nearly two points clear of David Hayward, Mike Gee, Peter Leverick and Ken Ford. There were twenty ‘two spots’, which shows the high standard of play.

The Senior Men’s successful Packer Cup was played in superb weather conditions and a course in terrific condition. However, there were only two scores above forty. Eleven of the eighteen pairs had creditable scores bunched between 37 and 39 points. The winners, with 43 points, were Trevor Cook and Paul Hole, followed in second place by Mike Gee and Barry Watkins with 41 points.

Wells’ Seniors narrowly lost a keenly-contested match by four games to three in glorious weather at Isle of Wedmore.

Peter Leverick/John Watson, Geoff Ead/Colin Mantle and Mike Gee/Ken Ford were the winning pairs, whilst John Moxon was disappointed to lose on his debut as acting Captain, partnering Dave Hayward, who had to give a lot of shots in a particularly difficult encounter.

The Stragglers played at Mendip Springs. Terry Searle and Rory Meek, playing the course for the first time, came in with a two up win. John Baker and Adam Holliday won one up. Richard Mansfield and John Hockey fought valiantly against, but lost 3&2. Steve Heath and Gary Leigh had a comfortable 6&4 win. Finally, Grant Rogers and Phil Spring battled, but lost on the last hole.

The Ladies’ Alliance team played at Henbury and there were wins for Jen Jones and Philippa Gowen.
