Colin Mantle’s Captain’s Day was a roaring success, with everyone enjoying themselves.

The first two teams both had 48 points, with Rod Patch and Gerald Tonkins winning on countback. The first-placed Men’s team were Kelvin Parsons and John Blench, and the first Ladies’ team were Rosemary Hallett and Phyllis Lewison. Jill and Steve Bocquet were the first Mixed team.

Nearest the pin prizes went to Tina Davies, John Hockey, John Chillington and Erica Klim. Nearest the Pin in Two winners were Ashton Wylie and Tina Davies.

The Senior Men held the Whitmarsh Trophy for the over-seventies, and this was closely contested, with five achieving a score of forty points. It was a fine but blustery day, and the course had been slightly softened up after overnight rain. Roger Webber was first, Allan Bancroft was second, and Peter Jones was third.

Wells played top-of-the-table Bath in the Bristol and District Golf League. Mike Vincent and John Coughlan returned to the fray after years away to team up for the first time. They were up against Bath’s top pairing, and succumbed 3&2. The not-so-young pairing of Jack Baillie and Bill McCollum cast age aside and triumphed 2&1.

Newly-crowned Club Champion, Will Thompson, combined with Simon Jackson, showed continuing good form with a 5&4 win. Glen Crocker and Ian Burr played very well to continue the shock to Bath’s system with a 5&3 victory. Finally, Tim Harris and the now-recovered Nick Wilson, fought hard to win one-up.

This meant a fine, unexpected victory, 4–1 to Wells, and ensured their participation in this Division for next year.

Using only three clubs and a putter did not make any difference to Cath Levell in the Ladies’ King Castle Cup, who continued her winning streak. She was followed in second place by Diane Ramsay.
