Two local Ladies competed at the Amateur World Powerlifting Championships in Florida last month, both taking home a gold medal.

On top of winning gold, the duo of Christine Clarke and Nicola Burroughs Baker picked up five World Records

between them, competing against athletes from the USA, Azerbaijan, Poland and Russia.

Christine and Nicole had a two-step qualifying process, having to first qualify through the South West of England competition at the start of the year, which allowed them to compete at the British Champions back in May.

By reaching a certain amount of weight lifted, they qualified to represent Heat Britain at the World Championships in Florida.

Christine, competing in the Under-75kg Raw category, achieved World Records in squat, bench and deadlift, while Nicola Under came first in the 75kg Classic Raw category.

Christine has only been competing this year. She works in a local school for children with special needs and trains three times a week, competing in the Masters category for over-50s.

Nicola has been competing in Strong Woman for three years, and has British records for yoke walk 250kg, as well as atlas stone lifts and one-arm dumbell. She also came third at the World’s Strongest Natural Woman competiton in Finland last year, before switching from Strong Woman to Powerlifting categories at the start of this year.
