Mendip came out of the changing rooms fired up to play North Somerset, the team that was second placed on the league table. Mendip played strong attacking hockey from the start and dominated the first twenty minutes or so.
Within this period, the first goal came from a text book style short corner routine when Jess Baird stepped up and struck an unstoppable shot which hit the top of the back board. This settled Mendip’s nerves and gave them the confidence to build again and secure a second goal. This soon came in the form of an excellent run down the right wing by Lowri Bryant-Young, who dribbled round the back to cross to Ella Constable. Ella connected perfectly and swept the ball past the keeper.
North Somerset did manage to pull one back, despite the timely tackles from Olivia Collins and Sarah Whittaker. The midfield trio of Ella, Sally Stanford and Jackie Browning worked hard, and the third goal came from a run by Jackie, who crossed the ball into the D, where Amy McGowan was superbly placed at the left post to put the ball away. Mendip went into the break feeling positive and maintained their form for the second half. No more goals were scored by either side.
MOM went to Lowri for her blinding runs down the right wing and brilliant attacking play. Next week Mendip travel to Old Bristolians, 11.30 a.m. start.
