The Thirds wrapped up their league campaign with a good performance against a strong Weston Hornets side, who are still in the title hunt.

Despite losing flanker, Ben Routhorn, to injury in the warm up, Norton started well with some tenacious defence before Hornets took the lead. They began to dominate and scored three unanswered tries to give themselves a 17–0 lead.

Norton showed their spirit though as several good forward drives around the fringes saw them move ever closer to the try line. Mitch Rose was stopped just short and from here, some quick passing from the half backs, Jon Gianella and Ian Tiley, allowed centre, Luis Devila, to go over for a try.

Shortly after, Norton were on the attack again. This time, a close range drive from prop, Andy Hoggan, created the space for a rampaging Lee Taylor to power over from fifteen metres.

Hornets responded before half-time after a productive catch and drive, but Norton remained in touching distance.

The second half was an equally evenly contested affair. Despite more excellent defence Hornets looked to be cruising to victory before Norton again fought back.

Good play from the Norton back line stretched the visitor’s defence, with centre, Ed Mills, coming more into the game. Andrew Best also became more and more influential as Norton created space on the wide outside.

This positive attitude eventually led to lock, Nathan Morgan, going over following a close range drive from a lineout.

Hornets responded to seal the win before Norton earned a deserved four try bonus point when full back, Jon Swift, went over, under the posts, to score his first try of the season. Best added his second conversion of the afternoon to end the game.

The Thirds have had an enjoyable first season at this higher level following last year’s promotion, finishing in a respectable mid-table position. Captain, Ian Tiley, would like to thank everyone who has played a part and looks forward to seeing them all again next season.
