The Thirds came very close to toppling the league leaders on Saturday as they put in their best performance of the season.

Despite the narrow loss, the home side dominated the first half and ensured a four try bonus point before the break.

The pack were outstanding, which set the platform for the performance. Tries were scored at regular intervals, the first coming from centre, Rob Kernutt, as he powered over from twenty metres. Fly half, Andrew Best, was on hand to increase the score when he gathered his own kick ahead to race clear. He then also added a difficult conversion to give Norton a commanding lead.

Morganians fought back with a try of their own before number eight, Jamie Rose, extended the lead. The scoring was shared for the remainder of the half as Morganians replied with a try, but Norton ensured a commanding lead at the break when prop, Luke Short, powered over, following some excellent close range work from the pack.

Norton rang the changes at half-time to ensure the entire squad had a run out and Morganians fought their way back into the game with three second half tries. Norton missed a couple of kicks that would have earned the win and were also very close to scoring a pushover try. The chances came and went however, and a very relieved Morganians retained their unbeaten league record.

This week, Norton entertain North Petherton at Norton Down, kick-off at 2.30 p.m.
