Winscombe 24 Midsomer Norton 17

Hosts Winscombe started well as they camped in the Norton 22 for the opening ten minutes, Nor’s defence held strong denying an early score.

The home team finally converted with a score after 25 minutes, 7–0. Norton replied well through the pack with number 8 Joe Button tapping down from a pushover scrum five metres out. Then again a few minutes later on the stroke of half time a dominant catch and drive lineout saw Button get his second of the afternoon. HT 12–7.

Throughout the course of the second half Norton found themselves knocking on the door but not clinical enough as opportunities went begging and Winscombe, when turning the ball over in their own half, were able to score two tries taking it to 19–12.

A frustrating second half for Norton saw Winscombe get the fourth bonus point with another score due to miss tackles in the Norton midfield. With a minute to play Norton’s Tom Fear crashed over from a quick tap penalty – Harry Smith adding the extras to get within losing bonus point range, but it was too little too late for Norton as the final whistle blew at 24–17 to Winscombe.

Norton came away with a losing bonus point but look ahead to this week where they play home to Old Bristolians, 2.30 pm KO at Norton Down.
