The search is on to find as many living members of the old Radstock Amateur Boxing Club as possible.
Founded in the 1950s by Eric Coles with the Scout Hall on Wells Hill as their training base, the club boasted the likes of Delroy Grubb, Alan Headley, Artie Grubb, Ellis Grubb, Royston Fuller, Geoff Fuller and Steve Sullivan under the watchful eye of coach, Ronald Cook.
Led today by coach, Sean Jenkins, Norton Radstock Amateur Boxing Club hopes to get in touch with as many as of the old members as possible so that two generations of boxers can come together for a presentation night celebrating the achievements of the two eras.
Sean said: “The idea came about when Eric got in touch with the club after he saw an article in The Journal telling the story of our fundraising attempts for a new gym floor.
“After speaking with him on the phone, I invited him to the gym for a chat and to see the present generation train. Sure enough he turned up, and after enjoying the stories of his club’s heyday, he presented me with a cheque for £100 towards our new flooring.”
The club would love to hear from any former members and their familes or even their grandchildren, and would love to invite them to the club’s annual end-of-season presentation night held at Paulton Rovers FC on Saturday, 16th June. The distinguished guests would be invited to present trophies and medals to present-day club members.
Sean continued: “We shouldn’t forget the boxing history of the area and its boxers, so for the one night we’d love to relive what they did. It would be fantastic to meet and see them give out awards to the youngsters who work hard in the gym all year round.”
Readers can contact the club via their Facebook page, pop into the gym or contact Sean on: 07727 041615.
