The Mendip Ladies’ Second Hockey XI faced top of the league, Frome 1st XI last weekend; a well drilled and unbeaten side in Wessex One.

Play was pretty balanced for the first fifteen minutes, until Frome managed to score two goals in close succession, the second of which, top rate defender, Sarah Whittaker, almost saved on the line.

Another goal before half-time saw the mid-point score at 3–0. Mendip came out strong in the second half, with plenty of well linked attack into Frome’s D, unfortunately to no avail, and with only two penalty corners awarded, the op- portunity to respond was narrowed further.

Mendip were determined to keep the goal difference at bay, but a converted penalty corner ten minutes in saw 4–0, a con- verted long corner, 5–0 and a final top D strike, 6–0.

A tough game for Mendip to learn from and a strong win for Frome 1st in their campaign for almost guaranteed promotion. Player of the Match went to Carrie Tiley in goal for her relentless work between the posts, stopping what could have been a double figure score line.

Mendip Ladies’ First team won 2–1 at home to Marlborough, while the Thirds lost 1–0 at Wells.
