More than 850 Commonwealth Flags will be raised in locations throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man, UK Overseas Territories, and Commonwealth countries today, Monday, 14th March – Commonwealth Day 2016.
Midsomer Norton Town Council has invited the four Primary Schools in the town to commemorate Commonwealth Day by reading the Commonwealth affirmation and helping the Town Mayor, Cllr Paul Myers, to raise the Commonwealth Flag.
“Last year was the first time that the Town Council supported this world-wide event and we are really pleased that the local Primary Schools are going to be joining us again to mark the occasion. We also hope that anyone in and around the town will be able to come along and witness our own community-wide celebration, mirroring what will be happening in over 850 other towns and cities around the world,” said Town Mayor, Cllr Paul Myers.
Pupils will join Councillors and hopefully a large turnout of local people, for the ceremony at the War Memorial flag pole in the High Street at 10 a.m. The children and their teachers will then attend a short reception at the Hollies Old Council Chamber to mark the event and talk to Councillors about the Commonwealth and what the Town Council and Mayor do in a repeat of the first commemoration in March 2015.
