ALMOST 250 residents of Haydon have signed a petition to reinstate the Grovewood Road field within the proposed Radstock and Haydon Conservation Area boundary.

That marks approximately one person per property.

The petition was formally handed to cabinet member for Built Environment, Housing and Sustainable Development, Cllr Matt McCabe, at Bath & North East Somerset Council by local residents Freya and Cllr Lesley Mansell, (Radstock ward) following weeks of concern from residents about the field’s removal after a late objection from the developer.

Residents had previously supported the inclusion of Haydon and the Grovewood Road field during the November 2025 consultation.

The field was originally assessed by B&NES officers as having positive character, forming part of the historic setting of the former Kilmersdon Colliery, and containing significant prehistoric archaeology.

Cllr Mansell said: “This petition shows the strength of feeling in Haydon.

“Residents have acted collectively and constructively to protect an important part of Radstock’s historic landscape.

“The field clearly meets B&NES’ own Conservation Area criteria, and the community is asking for a fair and transparent reconsideration.”

The petition highlights that the field forms part of the immediate setting of the former Kilmersdon Colliery, consistent with other areas of the Radstock Conservation Area, and contributes positively to Radstock’s historic landscape.

Further the field should be recognised for its archaeological significance with residents and Radstock Town Council supporting its inclusion. It also highlights that the developer’s late objection was the sole reason for removal and that the officer rationale is inconsistent with B&NES methodology as it applies to Bath and national guidance.

Freya added: “Residents want their voices heard. Today’s handover ensures our concerns are placed firmly back on the agenda.”

Cllr McCabe has confirmed receipt of the petition and will ensure it is formally considered by the council.
