The Mixed Seconds kicked off their winter campaign with a good win against Bristol Central 4.
Janie Bullus and Christine Hunt paired up against a young pairing of Karen and a very competent Kiera, and by ensuring that Karen received her fair share of play, were able to run out comfortable winners, 6–3, 6–3.
Ollie McGee and Andy Jeffery had a similar scenario against James and Nigel – young James was getting to everything and Nigel was fluffing volleys at the net. Ollie dazzled the opponents with his fast top- spin crosscourts and some amazing trick shots, and they won easily, 6–2, 6–3.
After a very friendly half- time snack, Christine and Ollie took on Karen and Nigel, and despite fierce resistance from the Central pair, managed to win 6–3, 6–3.
Janie and Andy knew they had a tough match on against James and Kiera. Unbelievably, the first nine service games were all broken! At 5–4 to Central, James stepped up and won his own serve.
Janie and Andy got into the groove in the second set, played much better tennis, made less mistakes and won 6–3. As the other court was still playing, a third set was agreed, but the younger, fitter Central pair took advantage of the tiring Janie and Andy to win 6–2. James particularly was out- standing in getting to some unreachable shots, and that won the day for them.
It was a very friendly match, and we look forward to the return! Andy Jeffery
