Mendip Point-to-Point had a miraculous escape from the weather to take place last Sunday at Ston Easton. There were no point-to-point meetings in England and Wales on Saturday and only one other on Sunday. Although the bitterly cold east wind did not ease up, the crowd were treated to some exciting racing.

Chloe Roddick, who trains out of Wellow, had two horses entered in the second race of the day, the maiden, Tara Point and Tacsi, also entered in the last race of the day, but neither ran. Sericina, owned by Mike Sheppard of Ston Easton, ran in the opener, the Fred Smith Memorial Confined Hunts Race, finishing in second place. Connections were pleased with her performance as she has had a wind operation earlier in the year. Winner of this race was Little George, owned and trained by John Hankinson.

Chloe had also entered Young Jim in the fifth race, the restricted, who was another non-runner. In the same race, a syndicate calling themselves the 'The Mendippers', ran a horse called Mrs Fir, named after a previous Hunt Secretary and trained by Pat Bryant, was placed second.

The main racing of the day is followed by youngsters on their ponies. These races are a wonderful starting point to many who would like to take up racing in adulthood. In the first for the smaller ponies was Matthew Limond from Radstock. In the race for the larger ponies, Charlotte Limond was riding Tom Thumb.

Point-to-Point Secretary, Mary Dowds, said that thanks to the tremendous hard work of the committee, a fantastic day's racing was held.
