Well, the weather hasn’t been very good for us bowlers over the last few weeks, but it takes a lot to call off a bowls game.

Last Sunday, we hosted a team from Wellington for a friendly match. The weather could have been better, but everyone enjoyed the bowling and the tea that followed. Wellington won overall. On Tuesday, the greens in Weston-super-Mare were all flooded, so the Ladies’ game against Victoria White was called off and is to be rearranged for a different date.

The Men played at Purnell in the Mid-Somerset League and came away with two points. The Ladies followed on Thursday and played the Ladies at Purnell in the North Somerset League. The weather was wet and cold but Fosseway came away with all ten points. But we were not so fortunate on Friday in the Mixed MS League game at Frome Park. The rain stayed away and the sun actually shone, but Fosseway lost on all rinks.

Saturday saw the Rainbow Day game organised by Barb Jones. This was a friendly game against players of our own club. There was a mixture of triples and pairs and the game was played in beautiful sunshine, apart from the last ten minutes when the skies opened. This meant that everyone went into tea ten minutes early.

Everyone turned up in brightly-coloured clothes and the club house was decorated with rainbow flags – we even had rainbow napkins. The cakes made by Barb and her daughter, Rachael, were served on beautiful china cake stands. Jam and cream scones were a great success, as were the chocolate brownies and coffee cake.

These, along with the sandwiches, made a very enjoyable tea for the bowlers and their families. A raffle was held with lots of lovely prizes. The highest winning rink was won by Ted Davis and Keith Burchill, who were presented with a bottle of wine each. Many thanks to Barbara for organising such a successful day; £200 was raised for the club funds.

Hopefully the weather will improve and there will be some good bowling next week. Don’t forget our Monday club nights for anyone wishing to try the game of bowls, please come along. This weekend is the Alan Hobbs Trophy, starting on Saturday, 22nd and carrying on to Sunday, 23rd. If you’re not playing, please come along and support those who are.
