It has been a bit of a frustrating week at Purnell Bowls Club. On Wednesday, it was a trip to local rivals, Fosseway Bowls Club, in the Mid-Somerset League and Purnell came away with a win on two rinks, losing on one, (points gained 14–2), which keeps the team clear at the top of the league by eight points.
It has also been a difficult week, with so many players unable to play for various reasons. On Saturday, with depleted teams, the A team had a great win at home in the Somerset Premier Division against Portishead B L, winning on two out the three rinks, points 10–2. With every team having lost at least one game, the team is in a very creditable third place in the division.
The B team visited Bath B in East One Division and with many of their regulars missing, pushed the strong home team all the way, losing by just two shots.
With players who had not bowled a bowl all season and two suffering with illness and hip problems, Purnell found Knowle C away far too strong for them and they lost on all three rinks. Credit to everyone who turned out to play to fulfill the fixtures.
On Sunday morning, the National Two Rink A team travelled to City Of Wells, again, without three of their regular players. It looked all so easy after twelve of the 21 ends, Steve Amor’s four were 18–4 up and Mike Talbot’s 18–5 up; but a game of bowls can change – Amor’s team did not win another end, drawing the game, 18–18. Talbot’s rink had to pull out all the stops at the end to win 23–17.
Purnell Bowls Club is holding open sessions throughout July on Saturday mornings from 10 a.m. to 12 noon.
Anyone from eight to eighty can come along. There is no membership to pay for the first season; there is free coaching and a free club shirt.
Don’t worry about the weather, we can go inside on the club’s superb indoor rinks, just turn up with a pair of flat soled shoes – everything else will be supplied.
