It was great news for Purnell Bowls Club when they heard that one of their young bowlers, 15-year-old Grace Stammers had been picked to play in the Somerset County Under-25s B double rink team at Leamington Spa in the English Championships.
Grace said: “I found the experience amazing and although the B team lost, it was great to see the Somerset A team win the National Amy Rose Bowl.”
Last Saturday was finals day at the club with the spectators witnessing some very close games. Teresa Hawkins in the Club’s Singles was up against Chris Godfrey, with Chris winning 20-18 she only needed one shot to win overall. Teresa, taking advantage, bowled a superb end getting the two shots needed to win the game, 21-20.
In the Men’s Singles, John Mathews was up against his old pal, Hugh Lorimer, this was another close encounter, John falling over the line to win in the end.
Don Dart put up a great fight against Jim Towells in the Two Wood, but just failed to win losing 15–14 on the last end.
In the Mixed Pairs, Ann and Colin Toogood, picked up the two shots they needed to win on the last end against Len and Yvonne Gunston, 19–18 in another tight affair.
Other results on the day: John Mathews had a good win against Terry Priddle in the Dave Moore, Terry Priddle beat Den Skehan in the over 65s, Jan Dart won against Di Crouch in the Fixed Jack, Jan Palmer and Ann Toogood won against Jan and Sally Dart in the Ladies Pairs and Jim Towells made it two wins on the day beating Purnell’s 2016 Champion John Mathews in the handicap.
This Thursday is the final of the Floodlight Charity Competition at Purnell at 6.15 p.m. when a big crowd is expected to boost the money raised for the chosen local charities, its been another very good year with a good amount of money being raised.
Another first for Purnell, last Tuesday was the first game of Skittles played at the club. Jan Palmer, the club’s treasurer, brought her ladies team, the Bush Babies, to play and although they lost, everyone agreed the alley played very well.
