It has been another busy week at Purnell Bowls Club. On Wednesday, the club played host to the Somerset County Ladies game against Berkshire – and everyone was full of praise for how the Purnell Ladies had decorated the new clubhouse – with Eve’s Kitchen providing the food, which was well received.
On Thursday, the club’s Triples of Steve Amor, Mike Pratt and John Mathews played in the National Finals at Leamington Spa.
They came up against a very good three, which included two Internationals, and although they lost, nothing can take away the fact that they got there in the first place. The club is very proud of what they have achieved to date with the County Final to come at Bloomfield in a week’s time.
On Friday, it was the finals of the Floodlight competition, and it was one of the Purnell teams who came out as winners. Hugh Lorimer, Den Skehan, Dave Chamberlain and Norman Davies carried off the first prize, beating Rex Padfield’s team from Norwest in the final. In third place was Tony Gregory’s team from Stotherts, Bath, beating Bob White’s Purnell team.
President, Bryn Hawkins, before presenting the prizes, thanked John Hansford, who organised and ran the competition and everyone else who had contributed to the great success of the event in its 26th year.
On Thursday, the Floodlight Charity Bowls got underway at Norwest, Purnell played Frome Selwood Park and got off to a great start, winning 3–2 on rinks.
Over the years, the charity has raised over £26,000 for local good causes – these games are played in a wonderful spirit with the emphasis not on winning, but raising money for the chosen charities through rink fees, tombolas and auctions.
On Sunday it was another busy day for the club, which was selected by Somerset County to hold the Semi-Finals of the remaining County Competition.
With the outdoor coming to an end, it is time to enrol teams for the indoor season. There are still spaces, but you will have to be quick. Ring John Hansford on: 01761 415957 – if you are just one or two players he will get you into a team.
If you would like to try bowls in the winter during those cold, wet days, give Don a ring on: 01761 471019 – you will not be disappointed.
