Shepton Mallet’s Men played away at City of Wells BC in the Mid-Somerset League, when they were beaten convincingly by the home side, who won on all four rinks.

As seems to be the norm this early summer, it drizzled quite persistently during most of the match, interspersed with some really heavy showers, although not enough to dampen the spirits of the teams, who soldiered on regardless.

In the event, the Wells bowlers were just too strong for the Mallets – who lost on all four rinks, by 104-40 shots, and by a points total of 16-0.

Shepton played at home against Westland Sports in the Wessex Mixed Friendly League – the match being curtailed at half-time, due to heavy rain. The rules dictate that for a score to stand, the match must go to a minimum of eleven ends before it can be decided by the score at that juncture. It’s an unsatisfactory way for events to unfold, but neither of the teams were happy to continue, due to the conditions.

After the stipulated amount of ends, Shepton won the match by a most convincing shots margin of 52-25 and a points total of 16-0.

On Saturday, Purnell Bowls Club were the visitors to Shepton, for a Men’s friendly match.

The weather stayed reasonably dry for a change, but with high winds, which thankfully did not affect the bowling too much, as Shepton’s Frithfield rink is well-protected by surrounding trees.

Purnell have a very strong side, who currently occupy second place in the Mid-Somerset League. Therefore, in a match that was played in a great spirit by both teams, it was something of a feather in the Mallets’ cap that they won the match, by 70-43 shots. Pity it wasn’t a League match!
