What a busy and brilliant weekend for Norwest Bowls Club. On Saturday evening, our ‘dummies’ quiz was a great success. Granted, we could have done with a few more teams, but the ones that did attend did us proud. The easy quiz sheets had a few scratching their heads, but nearly all ended up with very impressive scores.

Our ‘sit down if’ game was a huge success and revealed some very interesting details about some of our fellow Norwesters. One of the statements was ‘sit down if you’ve ever been skinny dipping,’ and when one of our chaps, who shall not be named, promptly sat down, it left his wife open mouthed, something which caused great hilarity all round.

Overall, it was a brilliant evening and thanks to everyone who showered us with so many great comments at the end. Thanks to everyone who came along laden with goodies for the supper table and raffle prizes. Thanks also to Ayeisha, who stepped in at the last minute to be our scorer, our raffle queen and general dogsbody, Chloe and to everyone who lent a hand to make the evening such a great success.

Although the points were very tight, our winning team, who carried off the prizes, were: Martyn, Lynne, Heather and Mark of the ‘2 + 2’ team. While our real ‘dummies’ were Kath, Tony, Mary and Bill, the ‘Hopefuls’ and they were awarded with, yes, you’ve guessed it, candy dummies!

The rest of my weekend seemed to be taken up with watching some brilliant bowls, courtesy of our young bowlers. On Saturday morning, I went to Purnells to watch the regular weekly training session. While the youngsters were put through their paces, which is always fun to watch, there was a club competition game on the other rink. This was played by two seasoned bowlers, Don and Ron, who took on two youngsters, Sam and Cameron and I have to say youth won out, leaving the old hands well and truly trounced. Well done, lads.

On Sunday, we were welcomed to Taunton Deane where a Somerset Under-25s team, including three of our local players, Sam, Cameron and Chloe, took on an Under-25s team from Devon.

Unfortunately, the Somerset team lost, but it was a thoroughly entertaining game and absolutely brilliant to see the future of the ‘old man’s’ game of bowls in such capable and talented young hands.
