TEAM captain Des Back and the Camerton and Peasedown Handicap ‘B’ team consisting of Trish Naish, Paul Dix, Jonathan Flatt, Christopher Simons and Nigel Wulcko went to the seaside this month to play the Weston Super Mare's ‘A’ team.

On a day which started hot the CPCC team set about their task and quickly wore down the opposition. Because of the hot weather, a shortened schedule had been arranged and by lunch time the job was done; Camerton and Peasedown held an unassailable 9-3 lead. The short afternoon session saw the final result of a CPCC 12-4 victory.

The whole team contributed to the win and Paul Dix improved his handicap; he now plays off 5.

There was a mid-morning team change when the Camerton and Peasedown Handicap ‘A’ team, captained by Marion Button, played against a strong Nailsea team at home on the Peasedown lawns the following week, Ann Munton and Jill Parker sharing the number 5 position in the team.

The day started early with a kindly breeze but the forecast was for searing heat from a cloudless sky come the afternoon. Nailsea had brought a team of five strong players, some with very low handicaps and they were intent on a win.

However, after the first two rounds Camerton and Peasedown were ahead, but with one match in dispute. A recent handicap change, which had not been ‘signed- off’ by an appropriate handicap officer, became the reason for a challenge from the Nailsea team.

Advice was sought from match referee Brian Wilson but there was conflict between the rules of Croquet England, croquet’s governing body, and the South West Federation League rules which were being applied for that match.

Games during the ever-increasing afternoon heat were equally divided between the clubs. The final result was CPCC won 11 of the 12 games but this could be changed to a 10 all draw when a final adjudication in made.
