SOMERSET went into their final game in the Metro Bank One Day Cup competition knowing that they had to win to have any chance of qualifying for the knock out stages. In the event they were well beaten by Lancashire.

After two years of enjoying success in the 50 over one day competition, Somerset’s form this season has been inconsistent, which has continued into the last 3 games .

After being asked to bat first Lancashire posted a massive 443 for 6, the biggest total for the Red Rose county against Somerset of which Keaton Jennings hit 156 and Rocky Flintoff 123, the pair adding 214 in 127 balls.

In reply despite 68 from Tom Lammonby and 42 from Josh Thomas. Somerset fell short in their run chase- and were all out for 269 in 39.2 overs.

Over the previous weekend Somerset enjoyed a convincing victory over Surrey on the Friday evening in front of 5000 fans.

Batting first the Cidermen posted 368 for 9 of which Lammonby contributed 114, Lewis Goldsworthy 83 and Archie Vaughan 52. In reply Surrey were dismissed for 180 in 38.2 overs, Vaughan taking 3 for 41 and Jack Leach 3 for 29.

Two days later at Northampton the visitors came down to earth, when after choosing to bat, they were bowled out for 185 in 47 overs, of which Lammonby hit 40.

Northants made light work of their target and reached 189 for 3 with 20 overs to spare. Somerset may not have reached the latter stages of the competition but it has allowed Lammonby to play himself into form ahead of the return of the championship with 547 runs at 68.37 including one century against Surrey, while of the young players wicket-keeper/batter Ben Church took the chance to showcase his talents.
