NAILSEA 2nds 87 all-out METHODISTS 221-4

The Methodists travelled to Nailsea on a hot afternoon to play a game of nine-a-side – both clubs having struggled to get a team together and common sense prevailing to get a game on.

Asked to bat first, the visitors were quickly in trouble as the away-swing of both Steve Spencer (2-27) and Adrian Procter (1-29) caused the Methodists’ top-three to edge the ball through to ‘keeper, Terry Robinson.

At 15-3, James Green joined his father, Stuart, in the middle, and the pair set about resurrecting the innings – with plenty of gaps in the field the partnership grew steadily, and by the 23rd over, they’d built a century stand.

Stuart was eventually bowled for 40 having added 137 runs for the fourth wicket, but James continued on and –

together with his uncle, Craig Eyles (29*) – took the total past 200 and also brought up his maiden hundred on his 30th birthday! He finished 116 not-out, having guided the Methodists to a competitive 221-4.

During tea, the temperature cooled as the cloud rolled in, Nailsea going out to bat with a tough chase on their hands. Openers, Spencer and Robinson, put on 20 initially, but wickets were soon falling regularly, as David Baker (2-21) and Alex Nash (3-15) found their range – the home side slumping to 50-for-6.

Procter (45) valiantly battled on as wickets fell around him, but eventually he was the last man out – chipping Daniel Shearn (2-16) to Martin Woolley to wrap Nailsea’s innings up for 87 in the 25th over, giving the Methodists victory by 134 runs. Daniel Shearn
