Midsomer Norton Cricket Club’s new Under-19 team host their first home fixtures this week in what promises to be an exciting new competition organised by the English Cricket Board.
Nicknamed ‘the Greencaps’, the team have already visited Hampset and Frome, playing in front of a packed local crowd in the latter game. With coloured kits sponsored by local business, CFH Docmail, the Somerset U-19 T20 Cup aims to engage young players in maintaining their interest in the game.
This is the first year that Midsomer Norton Cricket Club has entered a side, with players representing the First, Second and Third team Senior sides coming together toshowcase the best of the club’s strong youth section. Having won their opening fixture at Hampset Scorpions, the Frome Falcons saw their side overcome the Greencaps in a game punctuated by the obligatory T20 music and the smell of the BBQ wafting onto the square.
Following the roadtrip, the team return for three home games, as they look to secure a spot in the finals day with a top two finish. This week sees the team play Bath Swords on Thursday, 21st July and Kilmington Eagles on Friday, 22nd July, with next Friday’s derby against Timsbury Miners on the 29th July already stirring local rivalry. The Friday games coincide with MNCC’s popular family nights. Entry is free and all members and non-members are welcome to come along.
The fixtures and entertainment have been made possible through sponsorship from local businesses and a grant from Vinspired, a charity dedicated to help young people volunteer in their local communities. Team Manager, Dan Cox, believes there is much more to come from the Greencaps, and is hoping that they can demonstrate this in front of a large home crowd.
