ON A warm Tuesday evening, Paulton Rovers ran out 5-1 home winners with a clinical performance over Nailsea & Tickenham in the Premier Division of the Jewson Western Football League.

‘Gaffer’ Kieran Bagg would have been keen to build on the previous Saturday's excellent 4-0 result over Bridgwater Utd and from early on, the pressing game was putting Nailsea and Tickenham under pressure from the start.

After several half chances early on, the opener came in the eighth minute when Dan McBeam beat his man on the right and laid in a low cross across the box for Kyle Witt to tuck away for his first goal of the season.

It was a slightly untidy finish but he won't care! The lead was almost doubled moments later as another cross from Dan McBeam was met by Kitan Jaiyeoba but his shot was saved. But he did get his goal three minutes later when he pressed a defender into a mistake, robbing the ball, and taking it around the keeper to score. It was his fifth of the season so it was worrying to see him having to be withdrawn after just eighteen minutes.

Nailsea & Tickenham responded and began to come into the game and caused some issues from a couple of corners but as they had done on against Bridgwater, the defence was equal to anything they could throw at them. The game was effectively put out of sight in the 35th minute when Kitan's replacement, Elliot Haffenden, got onto the end of another Dan McBeam cross to slot home from close range. It was another untidy finish but again, the result was all the mattered!

The second half began as the first had left off with Rovers pressing and early shots from Dylan Gould and Dan McBeam forced saves from the N&T keeper. As the game wore on, Rovers started to make changes which slowed the game somewhat but they still looked the more likely to add to their total.

The fourth goal came in the 59th minute when captain, Jack Dancey, flicked on Kyle Witt's corner and Elliot Haffenden was able to tuck in from close range. More substitutions followed giving minutes to everyone in the matchday squad.

N&T pulled one back late in the game when Alfie Kelsey made an uncharacteristic error in hitting a pass across his goalmouth that was underpowered allowing Nico Cottle to pounce and roll the ball into an empty net.

The gloss was put back on the game again in added time when Kye Simpson won the ball on the edge of the box, with the ball rolling into the path of Elliot Haffenden who unselfishly laid it on to Dan McBeam to fire into the net and grab the goal he deserved.

Meanwhile, Saltash United made it four wins out of four to top the table after beating Ivybridge Town 3-1 away while Buckland Athletic dropped their first points of the season in a 3-3 draw at Street.

On the same night, Welton Rovers played away to Wells City and went down to a 4-0 defeat - their third loss in three matches, leaving them on the bottom of the first division table. Welton trailed by only one goal at half time and had hoped for a response after the interval, but City took control of the game.
