WAYNE Thorne’s first match as Welton Rovers’ new manager ended in 4-1 home defeat against a strong Sturminster Newton side, who demonstrated their promotion credentials with a clinical performance in the first division of the Jewson Western Footbal League at West Clewes.

In challenging conditions, with a biting wind sweeping across the pitch, both teams struggled to settle early on. Welton’s goalkeeper Massimo Sardo was tested first, saving low from Ashley Clarke.

The visitors took the lead after ten minutes through a well-worked set piece: William Guppy’s free kick was played wide to Buddy O’Shea, whose cross found Clarke diving to head home.

Welton responded with attacking intent. Courtney Charles struck the underside of the crossbar with a powerful volley, while Jake Slocombe narrowly missed with a long-range lob. Charles went close again with a hooked effort, but the hosts could not find the breakthrough.

After the interval, Welton pressed for an equaliser. Mason Kelsey and Charlie Madison combined to set up Slocombe, whose shot drifted wide. Sturminster extended their lead through Elliot Bevis, who cut inside and finished low into the corner.

Bevis added a second soon after, reacting quickest to a rebound after Sardo’s save. Adam Hall then made it four, weaving through the Welton defence before slotting home.

Welton salvaged a late consolation when substitute Will Banfield finished off a well-constructed move involving Chris Pile and Ashton Arlow. Despite flashes of promise, Welton were outplayed by a confident and composed Sturminster Newton side who look set to challenge at the top of the table. For Thorne, it was a tough but instructive debut in the dugout.

He takes over a side one place off the bottom of the table, with only one victory in 15 league matches.
