NORMALLY the ladies section at Orchardleigh Golf Club would have completed a number of early season fun competitions, but the weather conditions have been so awful and the course has had to close on numerous occasions.

This was the case for Captains' Drive-In which should have happened in the middle of March and the more recent fun event of the Lady Captain v Vice-Captain competition which had to be adapted. Lin Handley, the Lady Captain, was so determined not to have to cancel this event, she encouraged the first group to tee off just as the rain was starting, but after going down the first fairway, there was a rebellion and they retreated into the clubhouse.

Luckily Lin had a contingency plan so the Lady Captain's team and Vice-Captain's team fought it out in a general knowledge quiz instead. However Lin's team were victorious, beating Sue Marshall's Vice-Captain team..

When the rain had eased it was agreed the Drive-In should take place, so the members purchased marker sticks to place on the first fairway to guess where both the Captain and Vice would land their drives. The event was also to raise some money for the Captain's charity, Purple Elephant and a bring and buy stall raised £137 towards it.
