Mendip entertained Worlebury in the annual fixture to compete for the Centenary Jug.
This match started in 2008 to commemorate both Clubs’ Centenaries and is a 20-a-side fixture with the teams selected by the Mens, Ladies and Seniors’ Captains. After a heavy thunderstorm the match got underway with a 40 minute delay, with the course having coped extremely well with the amount of rain.
After a hard fought affair, Mendip triumphed 5½–4½. Mendip’s wins came from Men’s Captain James Boyce and Vice Captain, Alan Roper, Jim Scott and David Collins, Ladies’ Captain Anne Collins and Vice Captain Allison Rummings and Nola Russell and Sandie Roper, three matches were halved.
Pro Shop Nearest the Pin went to Roland Greenaway with John Ellis second and Martin Lenihan third.
The Ladies Alliance A Team visited Henbury who fielded a very strong Team. Mendip eventually went down 5–9 with wins for Ellen Reakes and Fran Davies and a fine half from Jinhee Page.
The B Team entertained Henbury C Team and found them too strong, gaining only a win from Jan Fukuyama and a half from Jenny Merrett. Worse was to follow when visiting Chipping Sodbury. With many regulars unavailable, Chris Williams and Sue
Alcock made their debuts but the Team suffered a heavy defeat.
The Ladies’ Friendly Team visited Wells and after a close match Mendip won 3–2. Wins came from Sue Needham/Julia Philips, Louise Scott/Lin Peel and Eileen Masters/Anne Collins.
Mendip Seniors visited Wedmore and found the hosts in good form, eventually going down to a 2–4 defeat. Winners for Mendip were Terry Carter/Nick Inskip and Keith Beasley/Charles Roberts.
Better fortunes came when Mendip entertained Wells resulting in a 4½–1½ victory.
Mendip’s wins came from Bryan Say/Tony Scott, Paul Ashman/Malcolm Dawkins, Michael O’Haire/Michael Anderson and Ian Hall/Seniors’ Captain Alan Edwards. A half was gained by David Jukes/Steve Cox.
