Six days after the Seniors section of Fosseway Golf Club beat Cricket St Thomas by four matches to two at home, they were beaten 4.5–1.5 in the return.
The only winners were Martyn Cuer and Terry Button, who won 4&3. Allen Cheney and Arthur Bellinger managed a half, but the other contests went very much the way of the home side. Captain, Gerry Rowell and Bill Lester were beaten 5&4, Cyril Blacker and Brian Phelps and Mike Ricketts with Frank Reeves lost 5&3 and there was a 4&2 defeat for Barry Dugmore and Alan Jones.
There was ample consolation for Ricketts in the Captain’s Trophy back on home territory. His impressive Stableford total of 44 points saw him a convincing winner. Cuer was in second place with 41 points, beating off the challenge of Reg Curtis, who also had 41, but was third on countback. Cuer capped a good week by winning the prize for being nearest the pin on the sixteenth hole; Geoff Hallett was closest on the first hole, while Blacker won the award for the longest drive. This Thursday, Fosseway welcome other clubs to their Seniors’ Open Day.
