THE Seniors section of Fosseway Golf Club have continued their good start to their first season in the Avalon Seniors Golf League with an emphatic 4-1 home success against Long Sutton A.
Paul Trigg and Paul Ellis led the way, winning in style 7&6, Malcolm Emery and Noel Chatfield came out on top 5&4, captain Andy Flagg and Allen Cheney won 4&3 while Martyn Cuer and Phil Winsley triumphed 4&2. Chris Appleton and Anthony Gregory were narrowly beaten 2 &1.
Gerry Rowell was the star performer in the May medal event at Fosseway with an excellent nett score of 61. It enabled him to win Division 2 by a clear six shots from second placed Richard Sullivan with Chatfield third with a nett 69. Winsley, meanwhile, won Division 1 with a nett 66, beating Mike Ricketts on countback. Steve Parsons was third with a nett 69.
The opening stages of the Seniors Championship for the Rupert Moore Cup produced some inspired golf and a few shocks along the way.
Holder Paul Trigg played a fine round against Mike Cole but was still beaten by the debutant who played well and took advantage of shots received to gain a splendid success . Others through to the quarter-finals to the competition are Rowell who beat Gregory, Flagg who defeated Alan Jones and Malcolm Tucker who got the better of Rex Wyatt.
In the preliminary round there were wins for Chatfield who beat Parsons, Ricketts who defeated Rob Wells, Graham Edgell who beat Chris Champion and John Cooper who overcame George Thurston.
Competition secretary Appleton played the best golf of the day to beat Steve Brixey while Frank Reeves came from four down at the turn to beat Cyril Blacker.
