The Mixed Section at Farrington Park held its penultimate trophy competition of the year last Sunday.
Sixteen pairs contested for the Romaine Trophy, a Four Ball Better Ball Stableford format off an 85% handicap. There were two Nearest the Pin challenges on the par 3 5th and 15th holes, these were won by Paul Panton and Jackie Walker respectively.
The fine Autumn weather contributed towards the good scoring and balls were running freely down the fairways giving welcome extra yardage to the players’ shots. Seven teams scored 40 points or more and countback had to be employed to decide the winners. Phil Thompson and Margaret Seery scored 44 points and clinched fourth place with a better back nine than Dave and Sue Forshaw, and Rob Thain and Lin Papadopoullos. Steve and Pauline Brixey battled it out for second place, with Rosi Brown and John Ward as both teams scored 45 points, however the Brixeys’ back nine scored one point better which relegated Rosi and John to third place.
The lowest handicapped pair in the field showed their class with a round including three birdies at the par 5 9th, 11th and 18th holes and a birdie at the par 3 15th and seven pars. Mandy and Steve Hobbs won the Romaine Punchbowl by one point with a great round of 46 points.
