The highlight of my week at Mendip was to see young Aimee Sawyer
playing her first eighteen holes for almost a year.
Three days after winning the Ladies’ Club Championship last August, plus 3.5 handicapper Aimee was involved in a terrible accident leading to many months in hospital and a further long period of rehabilitation. A very brave and determined young lady, Aimee faces further surgery, but says that will now have to wait until she has had a summer’s golf! And for the record, despite what she has been through, Aimee knocked it around in 9 over Gross! What an inspiration to any young person facing a setback in life.
One hundred and fifty three men competed for the Jubilee Cup which resulted in a very close run thing with the top six players all carding net 69’s with a further seven players on net 70’s! Matt Bendall was the winner of Division One, with Wayne Black second and Tom Small, playing off scratch third with a 1 under par score. Division Two went to Stephen Cox with Michael Gardiner second and Will Reilly third. Division Three was won by Robert Earney with Cliff Hall second and Kelvin Adams third. However, the overall winner was John Cross. After 4 Order of Merit events the current leader is Jack Hayes with Neil Onslow in second place and Ben Cox in third.
The Mens’ Mid Week Tankard saw 64 entrants and two outrageous scores. Andy Parfitt was the winner with 47 points, with Andy Frampton second with 46, earning both players large handicap reductions! Scores like this have not been seen for a very long time. In third place came Jack Haskins with 38, beating Troy Chivers on countback.
28 Ladies competed for the Centenary Plate and this resulted in a win for eleven-year-old Ffion Richardson with an excellent net 75. In second place came Sue Needham with 76, third place went to Jenny Merrett with 77, Fran Davies was fourth, with 80 and Jinhee Page was fifth with 81 after countback.
The Seniors entertained Bristol and Clifton and won the match 4½–1½ with wins for Keith Beasley/Stephen Cox, Steve Davis/Julian Tucker, Colin Davies/John Ellis and Kevin Carmody/Walford Gillison with Seniors’ Captain, Alan Edwards, playing with Martyn Russell gaining a hard fought for half after being two down with three to play.
The Mixed Team entertained an Enmore Team in a ten pairs a side match and romped home, winning all the matches with just one halved. The team welcomed two new pairs who have recently joined Mendip, Alison and Alan Kay and Lillian and David Peel. The afternoon was finished off with an excellent roast lunch prepared by Steve and his team.
Nearest the Pin was won by Andy Griffith with Nigel Brokenshire second and Paul Jamieson third.
And finally the Seniors held their only Medal Cup Competition of the season – the Ollie Parfitt Cup – a net event coupled with the Stanley Frewin Trophy event for the best Gross Score. The Course was set up very competitively, resulting in only one of the hundred and three competitors bettering par, that being the Cup Winner Eric Jordan with a fine net 68. In second place was Ian Perkins, playing off 2 with a net 71 and winning the Gross Trophy with a 73. Third was Chris Betenson, also with 71, with that man in form Andy Parfitt fourth with 72 after countback from Nigel Cheshire.
The Veterans’ prize went to Jim Mallon with 71 with Colin Clifton second with 74 and Julian Pallister third with 75. With only four
‘2 spots’ there was a handsome return for the lucky players.Tony Williams
