FORTY-FOUR pairs competed for the Captain’s Trophy at Mendip Golf Club and the winning pair with a score of 61, winning on countback from three other pairs, was men’s club captain Phil Leadbeater and his partner Daniel Owen.
The first of the John Wain Cup Stablefords was played and the winning score was 39 points by Corrine Durbin, with Anita Butcher runner up with 38 points.
The first of the Duchess Cup 9 hole Stableford competitions was also played and winning with a fine 19 points was Andrea Williams from Mary Ainsworth, also on 19 points.
The Ladies May Open Bowmaker was contested by 45 players and despite a tricky day weather wise, the winning team of Susy Rudkin, Julie Doyle & Louise Scott with a score of 74 points from Jennifer Merrett, Fran Davies & Lena Warren with 73 points.
Ninety-two Seniors came together for the annual Senior Captain’s Charity Day on Friday in support of Teenage Cancer Trust, the weather was extremely kind (until 2 holes from home) and the course was presented beautifully.
This resulted in some fantastic results with the captains team scoring 52 but being barred from taking their prizes by the captain. The winners were Steve Davis, Nick Parfitt, Gary Quin and Colin Wiltshire with an impressive gross 59 and net 53. 2nd place for John Broxup, Richard Evans, Adam Harris and Mark Hayball (55) and third place for Peter Arnold, Chris Giles, Noel McRoberts and Robert Miller. Twelve Seniors beat the Captain’s son, James, on the 8th.
The generosity of everyone resulted in £2,015 being raised for a great charity.
The Ladies’ friendly team travelled to Enmore for their second match of the season. It finished in a draw which given the surrounding circumstances was the right result.
At the start of a busy week of 3 fixtures, and with the vVice captain Ian, sunning himself in Turkey, 14 intrepid Mendip seniors headed to one of their favourite fixtures away to Knowle. The team slipped to a 4 1/2 - 2 1/2 defeat.
The result was softened by Knowles ' excellent Carvery and camaraderie. The club’s thoughts are with Michael Blowers, who on his debut, was forced off the course feeling unwell.
The Mixed friendly match against Knowle was as ever, highly enjoyable and entertaining. The match ended in a draw with both teams enjoying great camaraderie throughout.
It is rare in seniors friendlies to see a 6-0 win but that’s the outcome of the game against a strong Weston Super Mare who brought 3 single figure handicappers with them but struggled to cope with some very strong Mendip breeze.
Despite the numerous forecasts, the rain was kept at bay throughout all 6 matches. Congratulations to the whole team but the away fixture will be much more of a challenge.
Mendip have played their second ICL match, at home to Tall Pines. They beat them narrowly, winning 4-3.
What a busy week for the Seniors Team. The first return match of the season with Cumberwell Park coming to a wonderfully sunny Mendip, with the course in fantastic shape, with Mendip securing a 3 1/2 to 2 1/2 victory. A special mention to one of our more recent additions to the Seniors Squad, Mark Necker, who not only played all 3 games but won each one with different playing partners each time.
