A MAMMOTH field of 152 competitors battled it out for the first men’s Order of Merit trophy, the Burnell Cup. at Mendip Golf Club.
A magnificent 45 points was the winning score from Mario Rolli. A highlight of the day was surely a magnificent 7 birdies, and a ‘no score’ on hole 11, from Matt Lambert, playing off a course handicap of 5. The scoring was so good that 39 players scored 37 points or more in the event, testament to how good the course is playing now.
Ladies competition results: The ladies County Qualifier Stableford was won by Karen Cookson with a fine 40 points. Junior member, Lauren Morris won the 9 hole County Qualifier with an excellent 23 points, continuing some fine form for both players.
Match report: With ‘Captain Mally’ away, deputising captain, Craig Robertson, stepped in and reported a resounding 5-0 win for the Avalon C Team against Brean at home.
Match Day number 7 took the Mendip Seniors to Yeovil for yet another friendly away match. After the resounding whitewash, enjoyed at home, in their last fixture the Seniors were brought back down to earth and suffered a 4-2 loss.
The newly promoted Seniors Avalon team opened their campaign in Division 1 of the seniors league with a hard fought home win over perennial high achievers Isle of Wedmore. The match score was 3-2.
Jenny Ahlberg and Linda Papadopoullos won their third round match in the Daily Mail Foursomes against Bowood at Bowood, 3&2.
Open event news: The Spring Open Texas Scramble was contested by 100 players and the winning score of 52 came from Bill Law, Micheal Lucas, David Powell and Terry Powell from Chippenham Golf Club, beating Andy Humphries, Stephen Manning, Paul Morgan and Stepehen Stark, also on 52.
Other news: The Somerset Ladies County Championships were held at Enmore Park on Sunday, 3rd May. Played over 36 holes, Libbie Dezis shot a gross 154, placing her 2nd and winning the 2nd Salver and Gliddon Vase (for the best gross by an under 25 year old).
Mendip also retained The Holt Shield which is for the best nett score by 3 representatives of the same club. Congratulations go to Libbie, her sister Maisie Dezis and Ellen Reakes.
Meanwhile, the ladies at Mendip played for the Granny Trophy, a hotly contested competition with the winner being the lady who is either a granny or a step-granny.
The best score on the day went to junior member Harper Howerd, with a fabulous 41 points. However, the trophy went to Philippa Brown with 39 points. Division 1 was won by Harper Howerd, Division 2 went to Elaine P Richardson and Division 3 went to Philippa Brown with 39 points.
The winners of the Arizona Shuffle were Corinne Durbin, Isobel Panton, Linda Papadopoullos and Sandra Hares with a fabulous 84 points, who were closely followed by Caroline Simper, Pauline Young, Bridget Rylance and & Jennifer Howarth on 82 points.
