The Mendip Golf Club Ladies recently held their annual Open Bowmaker event that they combine with their Craft Fair. This attracted a full field, with visitors coming from a variety of clubs. Winning the Visitors competition were a team from Rushmore/Cumberwell, with 67 points.
In second place were a team from Burnham and Berrow, with 65, and in third place, Mendip Member, Jenny Lamb, partnered by two ladies from Wheathill who scored 62. The first Mendip team were Nichola Croft, Elaine Richardson and Chris Olds, with 69, and they were followed by Jean Padfield, Chris Williams and Diane Stanton, with 67, beating on countback, Vi Hayes, Chris Atkinson and Hilary Rowdon.
The Seniors’ main competitions have now been completed for the season, and therefore, the Seniors’ Order of Merit Champion can be announced. The winner, taking the four best scores submitted from the seven counting competitions, is Alan Roper, with 105 points. Well done, Alan, for your consistency. Second place saw a triple tie with 98 points – being Andy Griffiths, Rob Stanton and Seniors’ Vice Captain, Andy Frampton.
One Final Seniors’ event took place last week, which was the Centenary Trophy. For this event, the Seniors Section showed good support for Stuart Disney and his Pro Shop Team, by purchasing a variety of items as prizes and in return, Stuart threw in some extra items, thus extending the prize list even further. In fourth place came Martin Myers, with 37 points, in third, Alan Fussell, with 38, and in second place, Hugh Glandfield, with 39 points. However, the clear winner, with an excellent 42 points, was Simon Wheeler.
On the Mixed front, seven handicapper, Chairman of Greens, Paul Reakes and his twelve-year-old daughter, Ellen, competed in the Adult/Junior Greensomes event held by Clevedon Golf Club. And they competed very well; winning the competition with a fine forty points.
Mendip’s Mixed team completed their fixtures when visiting Long Ashton; a new fixture this year. Tough conditions and having to give shots in most of the matches, resulted in a 1½–6½ defeat, but that in itself did not detract from a very enjoyable visit to a most hospitable club. Despite giving nine shots, the low handicap pairing of Gill Brown and Selwyn Rees gained an excellent half and David and Lynn Cox gained a fine win.
