NEARLY 130 competed for the Sims Cup at Mendip Golf Club - and valuable Order of Merit points. The cup winner was Kevin York with a fine nett 68, winning on countback from the in-form John Shakesby and Ryan Sainsbury.

Leading the Gross Order of Merit is Jack Vowell, closely followed by Ryan Sainsbury. Leading the Nett Order of Merit is Kevin Brimble, with Stephen Coate hot on his heels.

The Ladies Stableford was won by Susan Forshaw with 38 points, with Jenny Merrett runner up with 35 points.

The ladies played the County 4BBB with some fabulous scoring. Winning the event with 42 points was Fran Davies and Carol King, closely followed by Vi Hayes and Gina Howard.

In the West of England Amateur Championship at Burnham & Berrow, two of Mendip’s finest players, Amee Sawyer and Ellen Reakes, along with Pro Shop Assistant, Frankie Dezis, successfully qualified for the matchplay stages.

Frankie won her first two matches, reaching the semi-final stage. Ellen and Aimee were drawn together in the first round. Aimee defeated Ellen and went on to also reach the semi-final. Sadly, both Aimee and Frankie lost their matches. With both players exhausted from the heat, they decided to share the spoils and finished in tied 3rd place.

Early in the morning, on a very pleasant August Sunday, twelve intrepid golfers left The Mendip Golf Club – four from the Ladies Section, four from the Men’s Section and four from The Seniors Section.

Their destination - Tidworth Garrison, set in the heart of Salisbury Plain and deep into Army territory. The recent very hot weather had temporarily abated and the Army appeared to be having a day off, due to the lack of the sound of clanking tank tracks , so all was set for the annual Tri-Counties match between The Mendip, Tidworth Garrison and Newbury & Crookham.

The trophy is awarded based on the aggregate scores of all team members and, in near ideal conditions, the scoring was impressive with the average Stableford score for the field being 34 points per player (reflected by the PCC being adjusted by -1).

Mendip were the holders and amassed a creditable team score of 409 points. Unfortunately,, that wasn’t sufficient to retain the trophy, as Newbury & Crookham came in with 411 points and the hosts, Tidworth Garrison, amassed 415 points to run out this year’s winners. Special mention to The Mendip players Jack Vowell, who continued his fine form with 40 points (playing off scratch), Debbie Godwin also with 40 points (playing off 31) and Jack Hayes with 39 points (playing off 4). Also, congratulations to the individual higher scorer Gilly Christmas, a member of Tidworth Garrison, who won on countback after scoring 42 points (off a handicap of 7).

Tidworth Garrison proved excellent hosts, as a good day was had by all, and the mantle has now been passed to Newbury & Crookham to host the event in 2027.

Mendip Golf Club’s Touring Professional Liam Copp has been busy on the Clutch Tour. With 15th place at Whittlebury Park and a level par total at Mannings Heath, Liam goes into what many consider the hardest event of the year. Liam will be competing in the arduous DP World Tour Qualifying School with the first stage being held at the Players Club in Bristol. We wish Liam the very best of luck.
