The Turkey Trot season is now in full swing at Mendip with the first event being a Bowmaker Medal.

The low handicap team of Jack Hayes, handicap six, Tom Lowe, handicap three and Tom Small, Scratch put in a fine showing but their net 131 was only good enough for third place. In second place, with 129, were Shaun Rich, Troy Chivers and M. Jones, with 129, but winning, with an excellent 126, were father and son, Malcolm and Wayne Srawley, together with Tom Chapman.

The next Turkey Trot event was a Texas Scramble and this was won by David Kent together with the Seviour brothers, Justin and Josh, who scored an amazing net 55.2. In second place were the team that has featured so many times over the years in this type of event, John Hargraves, Eric Jordan and Brian Smith, with 57, and in third place were Geoff Collard, P. Wood and T. Scott, with 58.8.

The Ladies’ event this week was a four-ball better ball, and the winning pair, low handicapper, Gill Brown, five, and higher handicapper, Allison Rumming, 34, combined to perfection (Allison recording a two for five points on the twelfth!) to win with 40 points, with Fran Davies / Marian Speed second, with 39, and Vi Hayes / Edwina Willis were third, with 38 points, after count back.

As previously reported, the Ladies’ Inter-Club Team won Division Three and the photo shows Team Captain (third from the left) with their Trophy at the Inter-Club League Annual general Meeting.

With the Seniors’ Team matches now all completed, courtesy of Seniors’ Captain Henry Banks, I can bring you the season’s statistics. 41 matches were played with 22 won, ten lost, eight halved and one abandoned. Many of the wins came during a storming finish to the season. What is good for the health of the club, is that 75 Seniors played in one or more matches. Well done to Captain, Henry, Vice-Captain, Andy Frampton, and to Geoff Mosley, who did so much on the admin front to support Henry.

Mendip held an Open Bowmaker event that attracted 141 entrants, 87 being visitors and 54 members. Despite an inch of rain falling during the previous 24 hours, the course held up remarkably well and drew a lot of compliments from the visiting players. Winning the visitors’ first prize was a team from Clevedon, captained by ex-Mendip member, Peter Horlock, who scored an excellent 84 points. Second visitors’ prize went to a team from Yeovil and Llanvern, with 79, third team came from Orchardleigh, again with 79, fourth place went to a team from The Players and Kingsdown, also with 79 and fifth place went to a team from Tiverton, with 78.

First Mendip Team, with 82 points, were Nick Inskip and Adam Spragg, with late replacement John Harvey, second were Tony Logan, Paul Reakes and Malcolm Srawley with 78 and in third spot Jim Mallon, John Padfield and John Stembridge, also with 78.
