Arrangements are well underway at Mendip Golf Club in preparation for the annual Open Day, which, this year, is being held on Monday, 6th May between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
This gives an excellent opportunity for beginners and existing golfers to visit the club to see what we can offer to anyone looking to take up golf, or who is looking for a new club to join. With the course beginning to look its very best, a visit is highly recommended. There will be a free coaching session with Stuart Disney, the resident Golf Professional, coaching for Juniors and the opportunity to play a few holes to sample the course. Further information can be obtained by telephoning the Pro Shop: 01749 840570 option 1.
The Greens Team have been very busy this winter with their Bunker Renovation Project on the greenside bunkers on six holes. These have been re-designed with riveted faces and, under the guidance of the agronomist, a new sand has been introduced which is anticipated will be far superior to the previous sand used. It has to be said they ‘look a picture’, and are now in full-play.
The Men’s Avalon A Team had a closely-fought affair when entertaining the Isle of Wedmore, with the match eventually ending all square. Wins for Mendip came from Spencer Pocock/Brian Rawlings and Dave Cox/Steve Coate, with Matt Horler/Will Waddington gaining a valuable half.
The Ladies event this week was a Mixup Bowmaker. Although 39 entered, only the very hardy completed their rounds due to some severe wet and windy weather. Winning with 65 points were new Ladies Captain, Marian Speed, Kay O’Connor and Diane Stanton, with Carol Mosley/Chris Olds/Karen Cookson second with 63 and Jean Padfield/Cora Pavey/Pauline Williams third with 57.
Mendip Seniors opened their account in the Somerset Seniors Rose Bowl K.O. with a win over Fosseway; the match played at Orchardleigh. Winning pairs for Mendip in their
3-2 success were Team Captain, Martin Myers/Terry Carter, Nigel Cheshire/Simon Atkinson and Club Captain, Paul Smith/Adrian Brooking-Clark.
The Seniors visited Taunton & Pickeridge for their latest match on a very cold and blustery day. The Match ended all-square, with wins coming from Seniors Captain, Bryan Lewis/Simon Wynn, John Ellis/Simon Atkinson and Brian Say/Andy Griffiths.
The Pro Shop Nearest the Pin went to Tony Taylo, with Tom Sears second and David Williams third.
The outgoing Club Captain, John Shakesby, was delighted to announce that £7,424 was raised during his and Ladies Captain, Bron Cooper’s year as Captains, and he and Bron wished to thank all those who had given so generously. The monies will be divided equally between two charities, The Teenage Cancer Trust and The St Margaret’s Hospice.
