Mendip’s Junior Team competed in the Somerset Team Championships held at Saltford.
This was a Team of 3 with aggregate scores counting. Junior Captain Josh Seviour was joined by 13 year old Connie Cox and 11 year old Ffion Richardson and between them they played some outstanding golf to run out as the Winners of the event. This qualifies them to attend the National Final held at Woodhall Spa. Well done Josh, Connie and Ffion, Mendip is very proud of you. Mendip also competed in a Somerset Junior Golf League event which saw Wells as Winners with Mendip in joint 2nd place. Connie Cox was 2nd in the Category 2 section with Daisy Jeffrey 4th. The Junior Section continues to see youngsters migrating from total beginners to being able to compete. One of the latest is House Manager Steve Morris’s daughter 8 year old Lauren who played in a Somerset Golf Union 9 hole event held at Wells. Whilst Lauren naturally found this a challenging experience, she really enjoyed it and cannot wait for the next event. Well done Lauren.
The Mens Centenary Team Trophy event saw 112 competitors and a very close result. The winners were Luke Weatherall, Sam Brown, Joe Reilly and Kyle Shepherd with 88 points one shot clear of Paul Drew,Tony Logan, Ryan Sainsbury and Clive Copp. 3rd after count back were Tom Small, Stuart Crane, Sam Cottle and Cameron Goudie with 85 leaving in 4th place Will Waddington, Ben Cox, Mark Crook and Matt Horler.
Mendip’s latest Open event was the 4bbb Mendip Vase. 84 Competitors were faced with some challenging conditions with heavy rain showers and strong winds. However that did not stop a Pairing from Long Ashton from carding an outstanding 45 points which gave them victory by a single point from a pair from Whitchurch, Cardiff. A Farrington Team were 3rd Visitor with 41 points. Best Mendip performance came from a pair very much in form at present, Terry Carter and Paul Merrett with 42 points with Seniors Captain Alan Edwards, playing with low handicapper Wayne Black, 2nd with 39 points. As a post script the Press Correspondent was playing with a father and son pairing off 4 and 6 from Weston. Their first visit to Mendip. They were fulsome in their praise about all aspects of the Course and bearing in mind Weston greens are always in tip top condition, were particularly complimentary about Mendip’s greens being so true and speedy despite the wet conditions. They will visit again.
39 ladies played in the MacMillan stableford event. Division 1 was won by Lynne Vowles with an excellent 36 points with Chris Down 2nd with 32 and Marian Speed 3rd with 31. Penny Oliver won Division 2 with 32 after count back from Lillian Peel with Margaret Hawker 3rd with 31. Division 3 went to Val Dixon with 33 with Pauline Williams 2nd with 32 after count back from Sue Needham.
Mendip’s Ladies Rogers Cup Team met Farrington, the holders for the past 2 years, at Stockwood Vale. After a very tight match Mendip went down 2-5. Wins came from Ellen Reakes and Marian Speed. The Inter Club Team also suffered defeat when entertaining Stockwood Vale. Final result 2-5 with a win for Lulu Carolan and halves from Chris and Andrea Williams. The Friendly Team had better luck beating Kingsdown 2½-1½. Wins this time from Mary Ainsworth playing with newcomer Maggie Brain and Alison Kay playing with Louise Scott. Eileen Masters and Caroline Simper earned a well deserved half.
The Seniors won the first leg of their annual fixture against West Wilts 5-1 with victories from Stephen Cox/Phil Butcher, Charles Roberts/Antony Scott, Rob Richardson/Steve Davis, Robert Millar/Alan Snow, Tony Taylor/Martin Sutherland and Jim Scott/Martin Osborne. Then against Long Ashton the first 4 pairs won their matches with the next 4 all going down to defeats so a halved match. Wins from Stephen Cox/Colin Davies, Nick Inskip/Alan Snow, Steve Davis/Alan Edwards and Selwyn Rees.Andy Griffiths.
Pro Shop Nearest the Pins competitions were won by John Ellis with Paul Lewis 2nd and Chris Butland with John Ellis 2nd.
And finally the Mendip Past Captains held their annual event with 25 playing and only 6 absentees. The age range is currently 63 years! Tony Logan put in a fine round to win the Cup and the day was completed with an excellent meal and plenty of good cheer as the Captains sat around one large table reminiscing about all their years of experiences at Mendip.
