Mendip’s Captain, James Boyce, was accompanied by forty-seven members on his Away Day at Oake Manor, raising money for Forever Friends.
The individual prize went to Cliff Hall with an excellent 42 points with Peter Rumming in 2nd place with 41. The Team prize went to Peter Rumming/Stephen Hodson/Doug Woodman/John Cross with 101 points.
117 players competed for the Showering Cup in very hot conditions. 2nd place was contested by 4 players on 37 points which after count back saw Paul Merrett in 2nd place followed by Chris Butland, Tom Chapman and Mervyn Vaughan. However with an outstanding 40 points the Cup was won this year by 10 handicapper Sam Brown. Well done Sam, now playing off 8.3.
The Ladies held a 3 person Open Bowmaker event on a blistering hot day with 72 competing. Winners were Mendip players Suzy Rudkin/Lyn Jones/Louise Scott with 82 points well clear of a Visitors 2nd placed Team with 76. Further Visitor Teams took 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th places with Mendip Members Sue Needham, Jinhee Page and ex Mendip Ladies Captain Patricia Rawlins, now playing at Sherborne, in 7th position with 69 points.
The Ladies Alliance A Team recorded an excellent 8-6 home win over local rivals Wells with wins for Jinhee Page, Lynne Vowles, Marian Speed and Fran Davies. The Alliance B Team had an even better result when entertaining Weston B recording a 11-3 win. Victories from Jenny Merrett, Chris Olds, Anne Hopkins, Lulu Carolan and Chris Down with Hilary Rowdon recording a half.
The Seniors at Mendip have been extremely busy over the past couple of weeks. Firstly they were home to Wells in the Somerset County Rosebowl an event won by Wells for the past 2 years. The Visitors brought a strong and experienced Team only to find that Mendip now has a strong Team of low handicap players of its own. The foursomes format is very demanding and good partnerships are vital. Ian Perkins and David Braithwaite got the show on the road with a good win and this was followed by wins for Seniors Vice Captain Steve Davis/Andy Frampton and David Jukes/John Stembridge. Bryan Lewis/John Ellis were in full control of their match until they lost focus over the last 3 holes to go down to a surprise defeat at the last hole. Jeremy Cooke and Clive Copp a new pairing took a time to get used to each others game and were 3 down after 3. However is was back to all square by the 17th when the Teams shook hands for an honourable half leaving the result at Mendip 3½ Wells 1½. The Mendip Scratch Team are now in the semi finals of the Seniors County Scratch Cup being surprisingly granted a walk over by Enmore who could not raise a Team on the day.
Mendip’s Seniors Avalon Team visited Tall Pines and found the course in fine shape. Wins for Mendip came from Phil Bendall/Chris Betenson, Jim Scott/Simon Brand, Terry Carter/Rob Richardson and Kevin Carmody/John Ellis to result in a 4-1 win.
The Seniors Friendly Team visited Tidworth and were beaten 2½-4½. Wins came from Steve Davis/Terry Carter and John Stembridge/Alan Edwards with a half gained by Alan Snow/Martin Osborne. Having won the home fixture 6-1 this means that Mendin win the Tidworth Trophy for 2021, their last win being in 2016. When visiting Burnham and Berrow the home Team took full revenge for the defeat they suffered when visiting Mendip. Bryan Lewis/Keith Beasley and Rob Richardson/Nick Inskip managed halves leaving the fixture all square over the two legs.
The Mendip Mixed Team gained a friendly half 3-3 when Wells Mixed came to visit on an extremely hot day. Wins came from Clive Copp/Pippa Brown, Sue and Rob Needham and Lilian and David Peel.
