Invitation Day was a Four Ball Better Ball competition, with Andrew Marshall and Geoff Turner coming in with 49 points to win the Men’s prize. In second place were Peter Bartholomew and David Kent.

Erica Klim and Jill Evans won the ladies prize with 47 points, with Diane Ramsay and Eileen Gilliband as runners-up. The nearest the pin winners were Wendy Lucas and Graham Jeffrey.

The Ladies played two friendly matches against Bath and Burnham and Berrow. The results from the Bath match did not favour Wells; however, the winning pairs of Kathy Lane and Janette Norris, Silvia Gibbon and Jenny Ead and Jannette Ambrosini and Barbara Harris against Burnham and Berrow gave them a win.

With the Red Arrows seeing the Avalon League off on the first tee, Simon Jackson and Andy Williams played out a tight game finishing all square. Debutants, father and son Steve and George Barrow found it hard going and lost narrowly. Ian Burr, with the help of Glen Crocker, came out winning again 3&2. Last out was Danny Wyrwoll and Jason Huck, who struggled to get ahead, despite playing some good golf, but as soon as the fifth was won they never looked back, playing some excellent golf and winning 7&5.

Dave Hayward and Tom Roberts fought hard in the Bristol and District game versus Thornbury, but lost on the eighteenth. Steve and George Barrow succumbed 4&3 and then Alan Todd and Simon Jackson steadied the ship and cruised to a 4&2 victory.

Glen Crocker and Pascal Norman won and in the final match, Mike Metcalfe and Bill McCollum fought hard and claimed a half.

The Seniors won the round versus Wedmore in the Somerset Seniors Bowl at Mendip Spring. Chris Betensen and Bill McCollum won the first match 2&1, swiftly followed by Malcolm Terry and George Davis, winning one up.

Steve Clark and Martin Waller had a comfortable 3&2 victory. Tim Harris and Mike Magrath won 5&3, and finally Glen Crocker and Mike Metcalfe won.

The Ladies’ Palmer Cup was played in glorious conditions and included winners of medals from the previous year. Despite Sandy Heath living up to her name in one of the bunkers and Julie Blunden losing her trolley down a hill where it nestled in the nettles, there were some excellent scores, with Sue Wells winning with nett 70 on countback from Janice White.
